Translation at Different Levels

Choosing the correct workflow and quality level for your requirements can save you an immense amount of time, costs, and most importantly your reputation.

Translation for internal use

When the translated documents are for internal use and to get a quick indication of the contents, a raw translation done by a human translator or a machine translation software may be sufficient. This is especially useful when you have thousands of foreign language documents and you want to access them in your language as quickly as possible.

Level One: Raw MT

Translated by Neural Machine Translation (NMT) engine with custom glossary. Thousands of pages can be translated within hours. If documents are dead PDFs or scanned images, two additional days may be sufficient to extract and prepare texts for MT.

Level Two: Raw HT

Translated and self-proofread by subject matter expert translators in their native language and quality checked for content integrity, layout, and formatting. This service is mostly used for documents that require a translation that can be relied on for document review, fact development, and other internal use.

Translation for external circulation

When sharing translated documents with clients and third parties (except courts, adjudicators, and government offices), a level of finesse is needed to ensure no typographical errors, awkwardly written phrases (even if correct), or stylistic issues find their way in front of your clients or other audience. This means that the translated text should be reviewed by a subject matter expert proofreader who will polish any apparent issues in the translated document.

Level Three: MTPE

Translated by Neural Machine Translation engine, comparatively reviewed by subject matter expert human translators, and quality checked for content integrity, layout, and formatting. This option is best used for large volumes of documents that need to be translated accurately within a constrained budget and without concern for stylistic issues.

Level Four: Proofread HT

Translated by a subject matter expert native translator(s), proofread by an independent linguist/subject expert, certified, and quality checked. This is the most commonly used service for documents that will be shared externally.

Translation for court or arbitral tribunal (certified translation)

Navigating the legal requirements for court submissions across jurisdictions can be daunting. We’ll figure it out for you. Certified translations aren’t all the same. With Vocalegal, you can count on the translated document to be defensible should an argument be challenged on the basis of translated evidence. We don’t rubber-stamp a raw human translation with a certificate, as that would be risky. We take steps to protect you.

Level Five: Legal/Certified Translation

Translated by subject matter expert translators, who translate into their first language, comparatively reviewed by a second translator of at least equal skills, quality checked for content integrity, layout, and formatting, and then certified as required by the relevant legal system. This is the minimum workflow needed for a translation to be certifiable according to ISO 17100:2015 and ISO 20771:2020, and the outcome is a defensible translation. This service is for documents used in courts, arbitral tribunals, and other government institutions.

Level Six: Translation for Print Publication

As level five, but with an additional monolingual proofreading step to ensure an outcome that is of publishing quality for public consumption and reads as if it were originally written in the language of the translation.

If it is unclear which is the best service level for you, our translation solution consultants are happy to discuss the details of your requirements and produce the most cost- and time-effective solution.
